Tamika & Kane – Engaged!

Downtown by the riverside Engagement Session

Summers are amazing for engagement sessions and this one took way too long for me to post considering how wonderful and easy it was to work with Tamika and Kane. I didn’t have to do much coaching with them, they just were glowing with love, always touching each other, looking deeply into each other’s eyes. It was a perfect setting in one of Calgary’s more modern parks (I like to think anyway) at St. Patrick’s Island just kitty-corner to East Village. It’s a great spot for a walk with your dog and then stop and get a bite or a coffee from Rosso! Not to mention the park’s iconic bridge.

Getting to be by water was important to them, there is something so beautiful about relating a river to a relationship. You can’t step in the same river twice, every moment in a relationship is always changing, always flowing.

We asked Tamika and Kane to tell us a little bit about themselves and how they met

  • Tell us where and when you first met (from each of your point of views)
We met on an app called whisper in July 2014.
  • Tell us about your first date. Where? When? What did you feel?
our first date was at the cineplex at chinook mall, where we saw the conjuring!
  • When did you know your fiance was the one? Details please!
Kane – after I started to realize that she was the smartest woman I’ve met and she helps me see things from a new perspective all the time. She puts up with my childish antics and I love her for that Tamika – when I started to see how kind and supportive he is i knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him!
  • When did you get engaged?
    Jul 1, 2016
  • Tell us about the proposal (from your own point of view) Details please! (we’re sappy for this stuff)
Kane – We planned to go to nose hill to take some pictures for a long time. Finally the date arrived, it was a nice sunny day and we hiked up the hill to a nice secluded spot we had picked out months before. We dressed up, brought the camera, and the GoPro. I set up the camera on the tripod (and while tamika was playing with sticks, set up the GoPro in a secret hidden spot) then I had tamika go pose in front of the camera for me so I could frame up the shot. Weeks before, I had taken some pictures of myself holding up some signs I made, they said “Ducky (my name for her), will you marry me?” These pictures were on the memory card in camera. I wanted her to scroll through them on her own when I asked her to come look at the photo I just took. That didn’t happen. I said “come here and see if these are good shots” she hopped over and looked at the picture. As I struggled to get the ring out of my pocket she she hopped back in front of the camera so I could take some more shots. Fail. I left the ring in my pocket and tried again. Another failure. The the third time I finally told her I took a few photos and she should scroll through them, so she did. I nervously stepped behind her, took the ring out of my pocket and got down on one knee. When she saw the photos of me holding the signs she gasped and turned around. She saw her very special ring made just for her and her very special man forever presenting it to her. She said yes! And I captured it all on the GoPro!
  • What do you do together for fun? Watch sports? Drink coffee? Play games? Cook? Movies? Workout? etc…
We go on cinematic adventures, we love to play games, and we like going out to Canmore for walks and adventures.
  • What is your favourite kind of wine?
    Any sweet wines!
  • What are your favourite snack foods?
    Cookies and popcorn!
  • If you were to have a “ME” day, what 3 things would you do for yourself?
Tamika would read a book, get her nails done, and nap. Kane would play music, do some 3d modelling or animation, and play some video games.
  • What 3 qualities best describe your fiance?
Kane is generous, supportive, and ambitious. Tamika is very supportive, intelligent, and selfless.
  • Tell us about your personal style. Are you modern, vintage, romantic, trendy, athletic, etc…
Tamika – is trendy! Kane is an unknown snowflake
  • What are you most looking forward to about your wedding day?
Besides marrying my best friend, having family and friends come together to celebrate with us

Avi & Laurie Engagement Session

Avi & Laurie’s Calgary Engagement Session

It’s great to get outside while the sun in shining! Avi and Laurie wanted a laid back and relaxed engagement session here in the city. We have so many beautiful parks and this time we visited Sandy Beach for the first time. There were plenty of family BBQ’s, kids playing, people walking their dogs, and finding a parking spot was HARD!

It was so relaxed and so many great spots, not to mention all of the pollen coming off of the trees!

Here is a bit about Laurie & Avi <3 We can’t wait for their wedding coming up so soon!

  • Tell us where and when you first met (from each of your point of views)
We met through mutual friends. Laurie came back to Calgary from university in Ottawa. I had moved to Calgary 5 years before that. We ended up having the same social circle.
  • Tell us about your first date. Where? When? What did you feel?
We went to Earls and just enjoyed chatting and getting to know each other.
  • When did you know your fiance was the one? Details please!
We settled into our relationship very effortlessly. Neither of us had experienced a relationship like this in the past, so this was new & exciting.
  • When did you get engaged?
    Dec 16, 2017
  • Tell us about the proposal (from your own point of view) Details please! (we’re sappy for this stuff)
We were in Banff as was our custom for the weekend of Hanukkah. On Saturday morning Laurie said we were going to Norquay to go tubing but then drove to a helicopter pad in Canmore. Because it was a blue sky and no wind day, we went close to the mountains and even between some peaks. We landed on a piece of land that bridged the BC-Alberta border for a chance to play in the snow. On the way back down Laurie pulled out a box, opened it, and presented me with a ring. Did he go down on one knee? Nope, he was strapped into a helicopter. Did Laurie say something mushy or even ask me to marry him? Nope, couldn’t hear him, the helicopter is very loud. Yup, just the right amount of romance for us.
  • What do you do together for fun? Watch sports? Drink coffee? Play games? Cook? Movies? Workout? etc…
We like to ski, go for drives, and just hang out. I know, not that exciting, but it works for us.
  • What is your favourite kind of wine?
I like wine, I’m not picky which kind. Laurie is more of a beer guy.
  • What are your favourite snack foods?
    Um, all of them!
  • If you were to have a “ME” day, what 3 things would you do for yourself?
    Sleep, eat, watch tv.
  • What’s one thing you think we should know about you that has defined who you are today?
We are both playful/immature. Meaning we don’t take things too seriously. 🙂
  • What 3 qualities best describe your fiance?
    Funny, helpful, cute
  • What would your fiance say are your best 3 qualities?
    friendly, compassionate, helpful
  • Tell us about your personal style. Are you modern, vintage, romantic, trendy, athletic, etc…
    Simple, easy going.
  • What are you most looking forward to about your wedding day?
    Celebrating with friends & family.

Brianna & Dave Canmore E-Session

Canmore E-Session
Brianna & David

I adore engagement sessions especially when we get to head out to the mountains! Canmore is my future living spot… Anyways! Photographing Brianna & Dave was so much fun. These two know how to goof around and I don’t think we stopped laughing. Dave is the king of Dad jokes and a good thing too with 2 little girls. Here are some awesome facts about Brianna & Dave.

Tell us where and when you first met
We first met when Dave came into the Husky restaurant while I was serving breakfast one more. It was an instant connection.

Tell us about your first date. Where? When? What did you feel?
We went to Toad & Turtle and spent 5-6 hours just talking and laughing. We didn’t even realize how many hours we’d been there for!

When did you know your fiance was the one?
The first time we talked

When did you get engaged?
Dec 20, 2016

Tell us about the proposal (from your own point of view) Details please! (we’re sappy for this stuff)
It was hilarious and not romantic at all at first lmao (The only thing romantic was what he said when he asked lol). We had just come home from dinner with my family for my nephew’s birthday. *please be prepared for rude humor* haha….I was *ahem* peeing and was at the perfect height to look like I was going to propose to Dave. So, naturally I grabbed his hand while I was peeing and jokingly asked him “will you marry me?” Then I, as normal, let a big one rip and yelled “blow dry!!” hehehehe!!!! He laughed so hard and then walked around the corner to the bedroom. I was washing my hands and he kept grabbing me and telling me he loved me so much and I was laughing, asking him if I could wash my hands please! Haha. He took my hand and walked me to the bed and then got on one knee. Dave told me how he never thought he would want to get married until the day he met me, how I am the girl of his dreams and nothing could make him happier then to spend the rest of his life with me. We cried our little sappy eyes out and hugged and I jumped up and down haha. Obviously, I said yes! Who wouldn’t say yes to such an amazing man?! 😁 We called everyone and then I told him he can hang out with his friends now….lmao jkjk. It is a fantastic memory and I wouldn’t change anything.

What do you do together for fun? Watch sports? Drink coffee? Play games? Cook? Movies? Workout? etc…
We love to cook and watch movies together! We’re definitely into fitness and Dave is all about MMA and boxing. He used to box competitively. We also love to go out for dinner and enjoy a nice brewski here and there as well.

What is your favourite kind of wine?
Red wine….bear flag, cupcake, dreaming tree,

What are your favourite snack foods?
Chips & Candy!! Dave loves sour candies, dill pickle & ketchup chips. I love anything! Gummies and sour, all chips…I buy a lot of healthy/organic snacks

If you were to have a “ME” day, what 3 things would you do for yourself?
Massage, Spa (hair & nails), nap 😊👌🏼

What’s one thing you think we should know about you that has defined who you are today?
I feel like I have been through a lot of adversity in my life but I have come out stronger every time. Through everything, I can still see the good in people and laugh about life.

What 3 qualities best describe your fiance?
He is so fun loving, thoughtful and just loving

What would your fiance say are your best 3 qualities?
His unconditional love, his crazy sense of humour ( he always knows how to make me smile, even when I don’t feel like smiling), and how much of a hard worker he is. He is such a helpful man and I love having him around!

Tell us about your personal style. Are you modern, vintage, romantic, trendy, athletic, etc…
We are definitely romance with rustic I’d say

What are you most looking forward to about your wedding day?
Just marrying this wonderful man and spending my life with him. Knowing that we get to be old, saggy people together.

Canada Day Proposal with One & Only

A One & Only Downtown Calgary Proposal

You know its going to be a good day when Sibyl from One & Only Proposals messages you and asks you to photograph one of their next proposals. She explained one of their first dates that was on a roof top and wanted to recreate that feeling in Downtown Calgary at Hotel Le Germain

Canada Day was a little bit blustery and raining but I so wanted this to happen out on the patio for Amaan & Natasha. We pushed it to the very last minute to set up the lights and the table from Orange Trunk Vintage Styling and Rentals before they arrived. Elijah and I hid behind the pillars for when Amaan would lead her out to the spot where he would ask her to be his wife! In no time they arrived, Amaan gave a beautiful heartfelt speech, got down on one knee, and she said YES!

My favourite part about photographing proposals is the pure emotion that comes out, there is nothing but that excitement happening and the world dissolves around them (coming from experience) Amaan told us he was afraid it would be awkward to have us there but he didn’t notice us snapping away at all.

We are so excited for these two and definitely hope they contact us for their wedding 😉

Kira & Brad’s Spring Engagement Session

There is nothing quite like and engagement session in the spring in Calgary. It was really a chance to get to know Kira and Brad on an even deeper level since our first consultation! One thing I can tell you is that they LOVE to laugh and are total nerds (in the greatest way, which we love) They brought their dog Finn or FN-2187 who is the most photogenic dog I’ve ever seen in my life. We talked about their first date and what they love to do together and Poke-Adventures (Pokemon Go) is a major part of their date nights since they would rather be low key than do anything extravagant on a date night. In fact their first date sounds like a perfect date night; a movie (The Avengers) and then just grabbing a case of beer and heading to the Glenmore Reservoir to chat! Simple, fun, love is where it’s at with these two!

You know I really love my job as a wedding photographer I have the opportunity to see so many loving couples and these guys seriously take the cake. They care so much for each other. I just adore the fact that Brad makes Kira’s lunch and makes sure there are extra pickles in there for her because that is her favourite snack. Brad is so grateful for Kira and how she has taken care of him and drives him around and how their love is just “fun and awesome.”

We asked them to tell us their versions of the proposal

Brad:

“I was very nervous, wasn’t sure how I was going to do it. Kira already had an idea since we had gone to look at rings so, felt like she had been expecting it for a while. I had asked her dad for permission before, that was pretty nerve wrecking. Kira ended up coming home early which put a lot of pressure on me to get things ready before she got home. I am glad she said yes! :)”

Kira:

“It was a Friday (April Fool’s Day actually…) and I hadn’t been feeling good at work so, at noon I called Brad and told him I was coming home. Had no idea what he had planned. So, I walk in the door and he’s there all dressed up with roses and I am so confused – in my head I’m like “did we have plans? did I forget?”. Then he gets down on one knee and gives me this heartfelt speech before asking me to marry him. Of course I said yes! My parents and his already knew so we gave them a call and let our siblings know as well. Then we headed to my parents house (they live 10 mins away) for champagne :)”

We can’t wait for their wedding coming up so quick at the Calgary Zoo! Let this hold you over till we post their wedding photos!

Marlene & Mark – Anything Grows + Cochrane Engagement Session

“We met while working at Anything Grows, a local greenhouse in Cochrane…”

Marlene & Mark’s Cochrane AB Engagement Session

I’ve known Marlene for quite some time, although not close friends we’ve been “aware” of each other haha! I was so excited when I saw they were getting engaged and then even more excited when they asked us to be their wedding photographers. As we started to plan their engagement session we talked about going to a park in Calgary somewhere, try and get some golden hour photos until I read their “How we met” story. I knew we had to do something with Anything Grows a green house in Cochrane AB.

Here’s a bit of their story :

“Mark and I met when working at Anything Grows; a local greenhouse in Cochrane. I was home for the summer and excited to have a fun summer job.

Mark was a bit younger…. he didn’t even have his drivers licence when we met. Since I had a car and would often leave on my lunch break I started to go on lunch with Mark. Partially because he was always sooo hungry and begging for me to bring him something back and it was nice to have some company.

We would often go to the Cochrane Ranche and hangout on the grass; chatting and getting to know each other. After our first summer working together I went back to Lethbridge for school and we kept in touch via MSN chat (lol) and Facebook.

I returned for another summer and got my job back at Anything Grows, we continued to go for lunch and enjoyed working together during our second summer at Anything Grows.

I returned to Lethbridge again and came home for another summer at Anything Grows…. this time Mark was suddenly grown up!!

Together with our very good friends Tynan and Andrea (who also met, and worked at Anything Grows) we started hanging out after work! That summer was the best ever as we all lived for our evenings together and spent what felt like the whole summer together. It cemented our attraction and we have been inseparable ever since!!”

Tell us! How did he propose?

“This summer we planned a trip that would take us to Creston to visit Pat & Cec and then on to Shuswap to visit my family. Before we left Mark had asked me if I wanted to spend a day “just you and me?” I thought it would be a great idea since our vacation would be short and it would be nice to spend some time together.

Mark suggested we visit the Glass House which is a tourist attraction in Creston where we had visited on our first trip to Creston during the summer we started dating.

On Tuesday August 9th we got up and went to the gym for a quick workout and came home and had breakfast with Cecile. Mark and his Mum played a game of crib and I napped…

It was a slightly overcast day which is rare for Creston so Mark packed up some firewood so we could go to the beach and have a fire.

We headed out for the Glass House and a nice date day. We walked around the site and Mark kept taking pictures… which is somewhat out of character for him. He seemed kinda fidgety and at one point said “I need a snack, do you need a snack, I’m going to go get our snacks.” He went to the car and came back with his backpack; we had some snacks and enjoyed the view.

After our snack we decided we had explored enough and we would head to the beach for a fire. As we were walking out I hear Mark say “Heeeey…” and I turn around to see him on one knee with his hand outstretched and a sparkly ring in his fingers. He asked me to marry him and I said yes!!”

What do you guys do for fun?

Play volleyball, workout, go outside, garden, watch TV/Movie, cook together, talk!

What are you most looking forward to on your wedding day?

Seeing each other at the beginning of the ceremony! GETTING MARRRRIED and celebrating with our friends and family 🙂

Dana & Dylan Engagement Session

Engagement Love in the Park
A Fall Calgary Engagement Session

Fall is such a beautiful time to photograph couples in Calgary! The colours, the light, and just everything about these sessions make me so excited. We were thrilled to meet with Dana & Dylan last August and hear about their Carriage House Inn wedding coming up in just a few days! These two love to laugh and be goofy and are always up to try something new like dance classes (first dance hint??), cooking, or painting.

We loved that they brought their little rescue pup Frankie, who is just the sweetest little pup you’ll ever meet. We hope we’ll be seeing a bit of her on the wedding day!

We just know this day is going to be a day filled with laughter, family, friends, and love. Have a look back at their engagement session

Stephanie & Mike’s Engagement Session

A Rocky Mountain Engagement Session

I know I take for granted that something so amazing an beautiful is just in our backyard. This engagement session definitely reminded me how I need to get out more! Stephanie & Mike only requested 2 things for their engagement session. One was water. Two, was mountains. Well how perfect is Canmore for just that!

We started out our session with my favourite part of the day. Dinner at The Grizzly Paw Brewing Co. where I think we spent most of our time together. Something I absolutely love about these two is how incredibly authentic they are, we sat talking and laughing for close to an hour and a half missing the sun before it hid behind the mountains… Oh well! We obviously still got some incredible images. We are so lucky to know these two and beyond happy that they chose us to photograph their engagement and their soon Wedding.

Love you both! <3

Chris & Cassie Engagement Session

Rainy Calgary Engagement Session

Summer in Calgary usually means rain, and this week there hasn’t been a shortage of that! Reminds me of when we went out to photograph Chris & Cassie’s engagement session in Edworthy Park. It was beautiful and sunny until we had to start then BLAM! Rain started pouring down, but thankfully that didn’t stop them, they were fully willing to walk around in the rain (with umbrellas of course).

We are so excited to see them say “I Do” This weekend!

Lisa + James Engagement Session

Lisa + James Winter Engagement Session

When you meet Lisa and James, not only will they strike you with their insane good looks, crystal blue eyes, and beautiful blonde hair, but they are the kindest people we have met until you ask James to have a snowball fight… We had so much fun during their Engagement session in Bowness Park, we met their beautiful pup who also happens to be blonde and blue eyed. It was a real treat to meet them all for the first time. We ran around and played, wanted to go skating but because they met on skates, proposed on skates, and will get married on skates, we opted for a snowball fight and wondering around the outskirts of Calgary instead.

One thing we love about our couples and our engagement sessions is we start with a general plan but we always find beautiful places to stop, interesting things seem to follow us around. Our session with Lisa + James was no different. We are so glad they trusted us. As we were driving to our second location Elijah spotted some really awesome fog happening just by a little bridge. We quickly ran over there and got some really neat shots with the fog and a beautiful sunset. How lucky are we!? Photography is definitely 25% planning and 75% luck.

Our last little part of the session we have to thank Orange Trunk Vintage Rentals for the awesome vintage sled. We also wanted to create a cozy winter photo. They made me feel warm and go “awww”we hope you will too 😉
